BRIEF HISTORY :

Acharya Brojendra Nath Seal College has a brilliant history to boast of. It was formerly known as Victoria College. As a seat of learning, it has a glorious past. As Coochbehar has a legacy of heritage since an eon, this college is sure to have a memory-trove to cash in on, no doubt. Way back in 1888, Maharaja Nripendra Narayan, who was an enthusiast in expanding learning in this region, built this college in the bustling central hub of the town of Coochbehar.

The first Principal of this College was J.D.Godley and the first Indian who graced the chair of the Principal was erudite Acharya Brojendra Nath Seal. For eighteen long years (1896-1913) he was at the helm of the affairs of this College. He was an ardent lover of books himself. Authoritative sources aver with this scholarly Principal, administrative matters came in

town along with his academic pursuits. Under the aegis of Acharya Brojendra Nath Seal, the College had provisions for teaching post-graduate courses in English Language and Literature and Philosophy. Even Law formed an appendage to it.

After the merging of the Princely State of Koch Bihar with India in 1950, the Government of West Bengal took up the onus of running this institution. Thus this College earned the status of a Government College. Again in 1970, commemorating the saintly principal’s contribution, this institution was renamed as Acharya Brojendra Nath Seal College. Since its nascence, it won a pride of place in the map of learning under the University of Calcutta. Of late, it is an eminent seat of learning under the University of North Bengal. One can easily take pride in the fact that the flambeau of learning is still aflame. Hundreds and thousands of students from various nooks and corners of North Bengal, file in every year seeking admission into this College. This century-old College is alma mater of hundreds of well-placed academicians, here and aboard. Eminent Professors were delighted to teach here. Needless to say, that this educational institution is still playing a significant role in expanding, disseminating higher education to the dark crannies of North Bengal. Presently the college takes pride in introducing post-graduate studies in Bengali, Sanskrit and Zoology.
